The stable wavelength fibre-coupled laser diode is one of the mainstream pump light sources in the current Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA). It plays a key role in optical communications, fibre sensing and fibre laser systems. 

 

EDFAs amplify 1550nm signal light by injecting a 976nm laser into an Erbium-doped fibre, which results in the excited excitation of Erbium ions. Compared to 980nm, 976nm pumping achieves higher pump absorption efficiency, making it particularly suitable for short gain fibres and applications requiring high gain.

 

High absorption efficiency: Erbium ions have a higher absorption coefficient for 976nm pump light, which can effectively improve the amplification efficiency.

Key to wavelength stability: There is a sensitive region of 'water peak absorption' near 976nm, and the laser wavelength must be very stable in order to ensure consistent, long-term reliability of EDFA performance.

Low noise characteristics: 976nm pumping compared to 1480nm pumping, can achieve lower noise index (NF), suitable for long-distance optical communications.
