Multimode fiber-coupled laser diodes are manufactured using semiconductor wafers based on wide-area side-emitting laser diode chips. They have a wider waveguide and emission area and therefore can produce higher laser power or output power.

Multimode laser diodes can emit light over a wider surface area due to the wide beam diffraction range. However, due to the wider emission region, the beam quality of multimode laser diodes is lower than that of single mode laser diodes.
