Is 1470nm Laser the Future of Precision Weeding in Agriculture?
In modern agriculture, weeds compete with crops for water and nutrients, restricting growth and reducing yield and quality. Traditional weeding methods have obvious drawbacks: chemical weeding leads to pesticide residues and environmental pollution; mechanical weeding damages soil structure; manual weeding features high labor intensity, low efficiency and high cost. Against the background of efficient, eco-friendly and intelligent agriculture, laser weeding has emerged as an advanced weeding solution, aligning with the development of green agriculture and empowering intelligent agricultural transformation.
Laser weeding is based on the photothermal effect. When laser irradiates weed leaves or rhizomes, water or pigments in plant tissues selectively absorb light energy and convert it into heat rapidly. The local temperature of the irradiated weed tissue rises sharply, the water inside cells evaporates instantly, and the generated pressure ruptures the cell structure of weed leaves or rhizomes, effectively stopping weed growth.
At present, laser weeding includes several technical routes. The 450 nm blue laser diode scheme relies on high chlorophyll absorption, but it has limited application scenarios and potential retinal damage risks. The CO₂ laser (10.6 μm) scheme features strong water absorption, yet it is bulky, hard to integrate into mobile platforms, and has limited long-term control effect due to shallow heat penetration.

In contrast, near-infrared semiconductor lasers have become a research hotspot for their simple structure and low cost. As shown in the water absorption spectrum, the 1470 nm wavelength lies in a strong water absorption region, enabling highly efficient photothermal conversion. Compared with 10.6 μm laser, 1470 nm laser has moderate tissue penetration depth: it can effectively destroy the vascular tissue of weed stems and leaves, block nutrient transport, and make weeds wither gradually without damaging soil structure or nearby crop roots, realizing precise and safe weeding.
In engineering application, 1470 nm semiconductor lasers are small in size and high in energy efficiency, easy to integrate into modular arrays and mobile platforms. They support direct fiber output without complex resonant cavities or galvanometer systems, reducing optical path calibration and maintenance in outdoor agricultural environments, improving stability and convenience.
BrandNew Technology Empowers Laser Weeding
1470nm 300W 400μm Fiber Coupled Laser
In terms of core equipment performance, relying on self-developed high-power chips and self-developed automatic assembly equipment for modules based on Active Alignment (AA) technology, Baoniu Technology has successfully launched a fiber coupled laser tailored for the 1470 nm band, empowering modern agricultural weeding equipment with core technological breakthroughs. This product adopts a 400 μm fiber core diameter design, with a stable continuous output power of over 300 W.

As shown in the continuous output power curves from 15℃ to 30℃, the module output power remains above 300 W in the cooling temperature range of 15℃–30℃, and the electro-optical conversion efficiency exceeds 26%, showing excellent power stability and energy utilization. Thanks to the self-controlled chip and packaging technology, the product features reliable performance in a wide temperature range and wide current range.

In addition, the product has a spectral width (FWHM) < 6 nm, and shows good spectral characteristics and wavelength stability in the operating current range of 3A-20A, further ensuring the accuracy of weeding operations, providing multiple technical guarantees for the efficient and stable implementation of laser weeding.

The compact and highly integrated modular structure of this product comes from the in-depth matching design of chips and modules by Baoniu Technology, which can be quickly integrated into multi-functional laser weeding platforms, providing a high-efficiency, high-stability and high-reliability self-controlled core light source for modern agricultural intelligent weeding equipment that is modular, lightweight and rapidly assembled.
In the future, with the integration of laser weeding technology, intelligent recognition, mobile platforms and automatic navigation systems, the use of chemical herbicides in agricultural production will be gradually replaced or greatly reduced, thus achieving truly environmentally friendly, efficient and precise weeding.
