A laser diode (LD) is a current device that emits laser light only when the forward current it passes exceeds the threshold current Ith.
In order for the LD high-speed switch to operate, it must be applied with a DC bias current IBIAS slightly larger than the threshold current.
The two main parameters of LD: threshold current Ith and slope efficiency S are functions of temperature and are discrete.
